Strong numbers on the London Metal Exchange’s April running of it’s introductory courses have prompted the addition of an extra course in London this summer (27-29 June 2016).
The London courses include the a visit to the exchange’s open outcry trading floor. The recently redesigned viewing facilities mean attendees experience the immediacy, urgency and expertise of the traders at close quarters.

Last week’s course in London enjoyed seeing the new ring for the first time. Visitors are no longer separated from the ring by glass and it is much easier to follow the trading, plus there is a sense that the traders are watching the visitors almost as much as the visitors are watching the traders.
“Very insightful and detailed course on the LME and the intrinsic workings” JBM International
“Well planned and executed. Great material, excellent trainer” Indometal

Being invited to Paris any time is a pleasure, and particularly in spring time. A double running of a two day course last week gave some time to linger in the lovely parks that are on the brink of bursting into flower.
In the training room, the focus was on hedging to preserve the value of collateral in financing facilities. Metals were the main commodity sector, with some additional discussions of energy and agricultural commodities. The unfortunate events in Brussels lent a sombre note to break out and lunch time conversations, and the Eiffel Tower was lit in the Belgian colours as a mark of respect.
“Good at simplifying concepts and provided several concrete understandable examples” “She knows perfectly the subject and able to keep the audience awake!”
The first LME course for 2016 took place while the LME moved from Leadenhall Street to their new offices in Finsbury Square. A particularly interesting cross-section of the industry was represented with several membership categories attending, as well as a softs warehouse applying to become an LME registered warehouse, fabricators, consumers and financial players. Comparably few stayed for the options day which turned into a hands-on interactive tutorial, with lots of real examples priced.
“Really nicely tailored, practical tips, good experience, open to questions – Great!” ING Bank
“Very well informed tutor, covered pertinent topical issues. Great insight into LME” Koch Supply and Trading
The next LME course will take place in London on 20-22 April 2016, and places are filling fast. Check out Upcoming Courses for a full list of future dates and course locations.
Sydney is the latest city chosen to host the LME introductory training courses this year. Sydney joins Cape Town, Rome, Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto as new venues for 2016. These cities underscore the global nature of business transacted via the London Metal Exchange, and we look forward to meeting many of you at these new locations.
There are still a few places available on the London course (27-29 January) and if you are attending Indaba in Cape Town, why not make a full week of it and join us for the new two day training course “London Metal Exchange (LME) Price-Risk Management Training” (11-12 February)?
Atlanta has been confirmed as the second US city for the London Metal Exchange introductory courses. This busy city is a key hub for the southeastern United States. The courses will run on 15-17 November 2016.

The last LME course for 2015 took place in warm winter sunshine in Dubai. A backdrop of elegant high rise towers and a soundtrack of jazzy Christmas carols did not distract delegates from the course. The new LME contracts (aluminium premium contracts, steel scrap and rebar) featured for the first time since their November launch and were discussed in depth. Early departures to catch flights meant the final presentation of certificates was virtually a private GARMCO award ceremony.
“Very efficient … Supports answers with live examples” Napco Group
“Perfect overall!” GARMCO
The course is due to return to Dubai on 16-18 May 2016 and the next LME course will take place in London on 27-29 January 2016.

Five days of presentations, workshops, guest speakers and visits to trading floors just weren’t enough for the recent attendees of The London School of Commodity Price Risk Management, with several calls to consider extending the course duration.
“Not enough time” Gas and power trader
The updated agenda was well received, and will continue to shift towards learning via realistic case studies. The London Metal Exchange visit is always popular, and a particularly exciting nickel kerb session led one energy producer to declare that nickel is now their preferred commodity.
“Very good introduction to commodity markets” Sberbank
“Very well presented material, great examples and patient trainer. Answered all questions and clearly an expert in her field” Rexam

In pale wintery sunshine, overlooking the Bosphorus, a select group took part in the LME courses in Istanbul last week. The smaller than usual group maximised the opportunity for personal attention, and benefitted from extra practical sessions on using futures contracts to manage price mismatches in physical contracts, and enjoyed an in-depth option pricing tutorial.
“Good detail / informative” Entas Trading
“Excellent. I learnt especially options well thanks to trainer.” Sarkuysan Electrolytic Copper
