Frequently participants on LME training courses comment on the diversity of attendees. This week’s attendees at the London course were spread right across the metals value chain, and associated services. There were different backgrounds, nationalities and intriguing previous careers, including a former policeman now working at a regulator. The diversity makes for interesting discussions which definitely enhance the learning experience.

Our Managing Director was shocked to be picked out as the winner at the recent TXF conference on global commodity finance in Amsterdam. It’s just as well the guitar was inflatable as she really can’t play. The flower power theme made for a great atmosphere over the few days.

A huge thank you goes to Eugene Lee of Hudbay Minerals for coordinating a series of London Metal Exchange courses in Toronto last week. Instead of travelling to attend a public course, Eugene worked with the LME to devise a course customised to the needs of metal and concentrate sellers and hosted the courses in partnership with other producers. Representatives from four companies attended, and familiar faces from other LME training courses also attended the networking event. It was an intense few days, but feedback has been great.

2019 has started strongly for the LME introductory training courses. This week’s course was well attended with over 27 participants representing 21 companies from 9 countries joining us over the three days. Almost half attended the full three days, with the others choosing the individual days that suited their needs best or returning to tackle futures and/or options after completing the introductory day previously.

The popular five-day London School of Commodities has been condensed into a concise, jam-packed three days for those who cannot spare an entire week away from the office. The course retains the broad commodity sector coverage while also allowing time for workshops and a visit to watch an open outcry trading session at the London Metal Exchange, which makes the classroom theory come alive. The last LME introductory training course of the year took place in New York last week. We enjoyed a top class location on Fifth Avenue close to the twinkling Christmas lights of the Bryant Park Christmas market. It was a relatively small group, with a good cross-section of market sectors, which allowed for plenty of individual attention and exploration of topics outside the core course.
